Brace yourselves for a dive into the world of South Korean defense. This is the Korea Defense Researchers. Since 1979, the Korea Defense Researchers, or KIDA, has been at the forefront of South Korea’s defense strategies.
KIDA isn’t just any think tank. It’s a government-funded research powerhouse. It tackles defense issues head-on. Its primary focus is the Korean Peninsula. KIDA actively aids defense policymakers. They provide crucial insights and analysis.
Each year, KIDA undertakes over 150 research projects. These projects span virtually all areas of defense policy. We’re talking security environments and force development. Weapon systems and acquisition are also key. Personnel and resource management are examined. Defense informatization and defense reform get attention too.
In August 1970, the Agency for Defense Development was established. This was under President Park Chung Hee’s self-reliant national defense initiative. The goal? To bolster national defense. Also, to enhance national research and development. Finally, to foster the domestic defense industry. ADD focuses on core weapons systems. It also works on core technology development. They study major weapons platforms in high-risk fields. These include unmanned, advanced, and new weapon systems.
ADD developed South Korea’s first ballistic missile, the Nike Hercules Korea-1. Its first successful test was in 1978. ADD also operates South Korea’s first dedicated military satellite, ANASIS-II. It launched on July 20, 2020.
In April of this year, a Defense AI Center was founded in Daejeon. It’s under the state-run Agency for Defense Development. This aligns with South Korea’s Defense Innovation 4.0 initiative. The center focuses on AI-based manned-unmanned teaming systems. Battlefield situational awareness is another key area. They also explore civilian AI technologies for military use.
KIDA and ADD contribute significantly to South Korea’s defense capabilities. They ensure the nation remains secure and technologically advanced. From missile systems to AI, they shape the future of defense.
