Giho Heunghakhoe’s vision comes alive before us at Korea Choongang School. It stands as a landmark in Bukchon. This school’s story begins in 1908. Patriots founded it during a precarious time. Japan was making its intentions to invade Korea known. The goal was clear. It was to save the nation through education.

Korea Choongang School actively participated in national movements. These included the March 1st Movement. It also joined the June 10th Movement and the Gwangju Student Movement. The March 1st Memorial Hall commemorates the independence movement. It was the teacher’s sleeping quarters. Here, they planned the March 1st Pro-Independence Movement. The June 10th memorial monument pays tribute to student activism. They shouted for independence. This was on the funeral day of Emperor Sunjong.

Look at the architecture surrounding us. It is quite exotic. This is because of the historical style. It reflects a pursuit of independent advancement. The buildings showcase this even during the Japanese colonial period. The main building is particularly striking. It is a two-story H-shaped granite structure in Gothic style. A four-story tower rises in the middle.

The school’s design is also noteworthy. Park Dong-jin, a Korean architect, designed it. He also designed Korea University’s main building. He designed the Chosun Ilbo Newspaper Company building as well. The main building of Korea Choongang School is designated as Historic Site No. 281.

In 1917, Kim Seong-su attempted to rename the school Baeksan School. This name alluded to Baekdusan Mountain. The Japanese quickly stopped this plan. Instead, they constructed a new building. It was named Jungang Middle and High School.

Many national leaders have walked these halls. The school preserved national education. It did so even through the sorrowful years of Japanese rule. The school replaced the former building that burned down in 1934.

This school is also a film location. Korea Choongang High School served as the backdrop for the drama “Winter Sonata.” The drama used the school to depict the cast’s high school days. In reality, this is an all-boys school. The filming took place during winter break.

As we conclude our visit, remember Korea Choongang School’s legacy. It stands as a testament to Korean resilience. It highlights the enduring spirit of education. The school building served as a beacon of hope during challenging times.
