Frozen in the Seoul winter, massive man-made rocks captured my attention at the Korea Bunjae Museum. These weren’t just any rocks. They were art, meticulously crafted by a friend of the museum owner, each supporting carefully placed trees, too large to move inside for the winter. My first encounter with Korean bonsai at the Korea Bunjae Museum was surprising. Visiting in the heart of winter, the bonsai collection was sheltering in giant greenhouses, a testament to the harsh Korean winters. The Korea Bunjae Museum wasn’t just a museum. It was a living, breathing community of bonsai enthusiasts. Hobbyists rented bench space, nurturing their trees under the watchful eye of a professional grower. This unique system provided access to misted greenhouses, regular watering, and expert advice, making bonsai cultivation accessible and convenient. The Korea Bunjae Museum’s collection showcased a wide range of bonsai, from impressive exposed root forests to enormous specimens that made me wonder about the dedication required for their upkeep. One tree, with its incredible root spread, stood out, a testament to the artistry of bonsai. The greenhouses were packed with thousands of trees, each a testament to the dedication of both hobbyists and professionals. It wasn’t just finished bonsai that filled the space. Raw material flourished, hinting at the continuous cycle of growth and refinement. The museum’s owner’s daughter, a recent Bonsai University graduate, shared her vision for promoting bonsai in Korea. Her passion and knowledge promised a bright future for the art form. The Korea Bunjae Museum is a testament to the artistry and community of bonsai in Korea. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, and where the passion for bonsai thrives, even in the depths of winter.
