You’re standing before a giant, enigmatic sculpture. It is called the Kopffüssler Statue. It seems to pulse with an almost alive, otherworldly energy. This massive statue, carved from Untersberg marble, stands as a testament to a time long past when the Salzburg region was home to giant, mysterious creatures. The Kopffüssler, also known as Endoceras, was a cephalopod that lived in the Ordovician period some 450 to 445 million years ago. They were some of the largest creatures on Earth at the time and a true example of how life on this planet has evolved into fantastic forms. This particular statue is a natural representation, carved by the German artist Jonathan Klinger in 2017. It was commissioned by the city to celebrate the history of our region. Though you are in a city, this is a reminder that the earth and its history are more complex than you might think. It is a beautiful reminder that time and nature have a lot to teach us about the past and maybe even the future. The Kopffüssler is a symbol of the incredible diversity that has existed on our planet. Stand there and let the story sink in.
