Lost in thought? Perhaps a moment of reflection is in order as we approach Konkai Komyoji Temple. This temple is locally known as Kurotani-san. It is a place steeped in history and spiritual significance.
Konkai Komyoji Temple’s story begins with Honen Shonin. He established a small hermitage here. Later, Emperor Go-Kogon gave the temple its name. He bestowed upon it the characters “Kin-Kai”. Thus, it became Konkai Komyoji Temple.
This temple has deep ties to the Aizu Clan. In 1862, the Aizu Clan made Konkai Komyoji their headquarters. They led 1,000 soldiers here. The temple’s location on a small hill made it a natural fort. A small gate on the south side protected it from invasion.
Konkai Komyoji Temple is one of the eight head temples of the Jodo sect. The temple was founded in 1175. The temple is located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto.
Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect, stayed here with his follower Shinku. They proclaimed their new Pure Land teaching. This was after leaving Mount Hiei in 1175. The original temple was the villa of Fujiwara Akitoki. He was Shinku’s grandfather.
Aristocrats and ordinary people gathered here. They prayed for rebirth in the Pure Land. They imagined it beyond the setting sun.
The temple faced destruction multiple times. The Onin War from 1467 to 1477 ravaged Kyoto. Fire destroyed it in 1934. But each time, it was rebuilt. In 1942, Dr. Amanuma designed the rebuilt temple. He was an architect from Kyoto University. It is considered an outstanding wooden structure.
The colossal two-story ceremonial gate dates back to 1860. Inside, art treasures await. A Raigohzu depicts Amida Buddha. Bodhisattvas descend to receive the faithful. Sliding doors display pine trees and tigers.
The wooden sculpture of St. Honen at age 75 is enshrined. The building was destroyed by fire in 1932. It was restored ten years later.
The oldest building here dates back to 1605. The Toyotomis rebuilt it. The main image is of Amitabha Buddha. It contains the curving tools used by Genshin.
One of the special features of Konkai Komyoji Temple is the Monju Bosatsu statue. It is one of the three Monju statues in Japan. It is said to bring blessings for academic achievement.
Another interesting sight is the stone Buddha with afro hair. You can see it on the eastern slope.
The temple also hosts special nighttime viewings. The autumn leaves reflected on the water captivate visitors. The “Garden of Purple Clouds” is especially beautiful.
