Have you ever heard of a district named after a sound? Kong Pisei District, nestled in the heart of Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia, might just be it. Legend has it that the name “Kong Pisei” echoes the gentle whisper of the wind as it rustles through the region’s lush rice fields. Kong Pisei is more than just a name. It’s a district steeped in history, marked both by progress and the echoes of the past. In recent times, Kong Pisei has become a hub for industry. A testament to this is the Wing Star Shoes factory, a bustling center providing livelihoods for many. However, Kong Pisei has also witnessed history’s darker moments. In a poignant reminder of Cambodia’s troubled past, a massive 340 kg US M117 bomb from a bygone era was unearthed in Chamkar Doung village in 2019. This stark discovery brought the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) rushing to the scene to safely dispose of the explosive, echoing the importance of peace and the long road to recovery. Today, Kong Pisei is a district standing at the crossroads, embracing progress while still healing wounds of the past. The gentle whisper of the wind through the rice fields seems to carry a message of resilience, a testament to Kong Pisei’s enduring spirit.
