Did you ever imagine a school where the average graduation grade is a 1.9? Here at Kolleg Schöneberg, that dream became a reality in 2023. Thirty graduates, three with a perfect 1.0 and fourteen more with a grade starting with a 1, celebrated their achievement. Kolleg Schöneberg isn’t your typical high school. It’s a second chance institution, a place where adults return to pursue their Abitur, the German equivalent of a high school diploma. Located on Nürnberger Straße 63, this grand Jugendstil building, erected in 1904, has witnessed a century of transformations. Originally built as a girl’s school, even Marlene Dietrich graced its halls from 1907 to 1914. The beautifully restored auditorium, with its original stucco and murals depicting various academic subjects, whispers tales of generations past. Kolleg Schöneberg, as we know it today, emerged from the educational reforms of the 1970s. A brainchild of dedicated politicians and educators, it aimed to boost social mobility by offering adults a path to higher education. Since 1971, Kolleg Schöneberg has been under the umbrella of the Albert-Einstein-Volkshochschule, offering evening and weekend courses alongside its daytime program. The journey to an Abitur at Kolleg Schöneberg is structured in three phases. A six-month preparatory course helps students reacquaint themselves with academic life. This is followed by a one-year introductory phase, similar to 11th grade. Finally, the two-year qualification phase, divided into four semesters, mirrors traditional high school. These semester grades contribute two-thirds towards the final Abitur score. What’s particularly remarkable about Kolleg Schöneberg is its accessibility. Tuition is free, learning materials are provided, and financial aid is available regardless of parental income. This support makes education attainable for those juggling family responsibilities, part-time jobs, or recovering from personal setbacks. The 2023 graduating class faced additional hurdles, navigating the challenges of the pandemic while pursuing their studies.
