Gazing up at Koki Hill SDA Church, have you ever wondered about its roots? This church, perched on Koki Knoll, overlooks Ela Beach and has a compelling history. Koki Hill SDA Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community in Port Moresby. The church, with over 3,000 members, is considered the mother church of all Seventh-day Adventist churches in Port Moresby and its surrounding areas. It originated from the Ela Beach Seventh-day Adventist Motu Church. The Ela Beach church, built in 1952, served a burgeoning congregation, often holding two services each Sabbath. As Port Moresby expanded, new churches sprang up. Many members migrated to these new locations. However, the Motu-speaking people from Rigo, Koiari, and the Aroma coastline remained at Ela Beach. The Wanigela people from the nearby Koki settlement also worshipped there until Koki Hill SDA Church opened its doors in 2001. Sadly, the Ela Beach church was decommissioned in 2008 due to health concerns. But its legacy lives on in Koki Hill SDA Church. This vibrant community welcomes visitors to join their Sabbath morning services. It’s a chance to experience the warmth and devotion that have defined this congregation for generations. Koki Hill SDA Church stands as a beacon of faith. It represents the growth and evolution of the Seventh-day Adventist community in Port Moresby.
