Mohamad Halim a resident remembers those days vividly. He partnered with town employees in 2015. Together they transformed the area in just four months.

Today Kok Lian Garden Community Garden thrives. Residents partnered to convert trash into a neighborhood treasure. Visitors now enjoy the sweet smells of fruits and spices. People come to admire nature’s beauty. It’s a place for exercise leisure and even celebrations. Wedding ceremonies and birthday parties are held here.

About two dozen volunteers maintain Kok Lian Garden Community Garden. They donate their surplus harvest to neighbors. Donations help them buy seeds soil and tools. The gardeners find joy in their work benefiting the community.

Kok Lian Garden Community Garden is part of a larger movement. Community gardens are popping up across Kuala Lumpur. These gardens add so much to urban communities.

Sapiah Mat Khalip tends to another community garden nearby. Her garden started as a flower garden in 2019. Later they added fruits and vegetables. This encouraged more people to get involved. It made fresh food accessible right outside their homes.

Gardeners feel like they are working together for the community. They sell their extra produce at 30 percent below market rate. Proceeds go back into Kok Lian Garden Community Garden for supplies. Hazlin Hayati regularly buys fruits and vegetables. She finds it cheaper and fresher than the market. Her family appreciates the gardeners’ efforts.

The UN Local Agenda 21 has been implemented in Kuala Lumpur since 2005. This encourages partnerships to improve the city. Community gardens fall under the Clean and Beautiful City theme.

Kuala Lumpur has urban gardens and herb gardens. The city’s Planning Department leads these projects. They receive support from government agencies private companies and NGOs. The first LA21 Community Gardening project began in 2014. It was a partnership between the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Raya Permai Flats residents. They created a 2.4-acre park managed by the residents.

From 2015 the program focused on urban gardens in smaller spaces. The city aimed to create three farms each year. They surpassed this goal approving ten applications in one year alone.

Currently Kuala Lumpur has 21 urban farms. They range from 270 m2 to 9700 m2. About 59000 m2 of land is dedicated to community gardens. This allows residents to cultivate plants and community bonds.

Kuala Lumpur is formalizing long-term goals for these gardens. The goal is to create a Low Carbon Society. They aim to achieve 30 percent green cover and increase open space to 2.0 ha per 1000 people.

The Urban Farm program began in 2015. It focuses on community engagement food resilience and creating carbon sinks. The estimated initial investment was RM 350000.00 since 2015. Financial savings are estimated at RM 300000 since 2015.
