A significant Buddhist landmark here in Phnom Penh. Now, Phnom Penh hasn’t always been the bustling metropolis you see today. It wasn’t even always the capital. Before the 15th century, the Khmer capital was Angkor, far to the north. But after Angkor fell, King Ponhea Yat sought a new location. Legend has it that a wealthy widow named Penh found a Koki tree. It was floating down the Tonle Sap River. Inside were four bronze Buddha statues. And a stone statue of Vishnu. This inspired the move to what became Phnom Penh. The king built a stupa behind Wat Phnom to house his and his family’s remains. along with the discovered Buddhist statues. The city flourished, becoming known as the “Pearl of Asia” by the 1920s. But its beauty couldn’t protect it from the horrors to come. The Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror emptied Phnom Penh. Its citizens forced into the countryside. Koh Andaet Pagoda, like the city itself, endured this dark period. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the Cambodian people and their faith.
