Hidden behind Hillcrest Avenue lies Knowles Cemetery. It’s a peaceful place, tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Knowles Cemetery is also known by a few other names. You might hear it called First Presbyterian Church of Glenolden Cemetery, Knowles Family Cemetery, or even Second Presbyterian Church of Darby Cemetery. The Knowles family once owned a vast amount of land here in Glenolden. We’re talking about 650 acres back in 1776. Imagine the vastness of that property. The land eventually became the site of Knowles Cemetery. In 1854, Glenolden Presbyterian Church purchased Knowles Family Cemetery. The price? A mere $100. Back then, the church charged $2 to dig a grave for a member. If you were a stranger, the price went up to $3. Today, Knowles Cemetery is bordered by the Interboro School District playing fields on three sides. It’s a quiet spot, a testament to the history of the Knowles family and the Glenolden community.
