In 1974, the story of Know Thy Neighbor Church started. Back then, it was known as Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village. The church began in a small storefront on Bleecker Street. For years, most members lived close enough to walk there. It was a true neighborhood church.
But New York City changed and so did Know Thy Neighbor Church. They outgrew the little storefront. Now, they gather for worship in Chelsea at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. It is located at 315 W. 22nd Street. Even though the location changed, the church is still active in Greenwich Village. They host art shows and jazz performances. They support NYU campus ministries. You will find prayer meetings, small groups, and community gatherings there.
Know Thy Neighbor Church even shares its old space. Two young church groups now worship there on Sundays. This shows the church’s commitment to generosity. They want to share what they have with others.
Today, the members of Know Thy Neighbor Church come from all over. They come from all five boroughs of New York City and New Jersey. In that way, it is less of a neighborhood church. It has become more of a city center church. But the church still holds onto its original mission. They deeply and creatively love their neighbors.
