Welcome to Knollwood United Methodist Church a vibrant hub of faith and community. Its story begins not here but in the heart of a growing African-American community in 1945. A small group yearned for a church of their own on the west side of Los Angeles. They held their first service in a Seventh-Day Adventist church a testament to their initial resourcefulness.

These pioneers including Ulysses S. Griggs Sr J.W. Bryant and many others prayed for guidance as they laid the foundation for Morgan Chapel. Reverend James L. Jones a former chaplain led their early services. They met in various locations a dance hall even a vacated Japanese church whose congregants were absent due to WWII internment.

Morgan Chapel later renamed Holman United Methodist Church blossomed. The congregation grew purchasing a former Jewish synagogue as their first permanent building. Reverend Lanneau L. White became their first permanent pastor. Under his leadership Holman thrived eventually purchasing the Pepperdine Estate and constructing an award-winning sanctuary designed by architect Kenneth Lind.

The church continued to grow. It expanded its ministry under the leadership of Reverend James M. Lawson Jr. a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He emphasized peace and social justice. A multipurpose building and parking structure were added. The sanctuary was later retrofitted to meet earthquake standards.

Holman’s legacy extends beyond its impressive structure. It represents a journey of faith resilience and community building. It reflects the spirit of its founders and the countless individuals who have contributed to its vibrant history. Their dedication to worship service and social justice continues to inspire.
