“A legacy of healing” This phrase echoes through the years. We stand before the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer Universitaetsklinik a place steeped in history.

Opened in 1909 as Langendreer’s community hospital it served the growing town. Financial difficulties led to a change in 1918. The Allgemeine Knappschaftsverein zu Bochum took over. The hospital became known as KK3. The Knappschaft the predecessor of today’s Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See is its indirect legal successor.

Its growth mirrored the region’s industrial boom. The hospital expanded dramatically. From 150 beds in 1909 it grew to 400 by 1931 and 540 by 1970. A significant transformation occurred in 1972. The old hospital was replaced with a new high-rise structure. The impressive roofline suggests a planned extra floor that was never added.

In 1977 the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer became a university clinic. It’s part of the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum under the Bochum Model. Since 2008 it’s fully integrated into the university hospital system.

Today this hospital boasts 479 beds and nine specialized departments. They include departments of anesthesiology intensive care and pain management. There are also departments of ophthalmology surgery traumatology orthopedics. Additionally there are departments of internal medicine including gastroenterology hematology oncology and cardiology. Other departments include oral maxillofacial and plastic facial surgery neurosurgery neurology and diagnostic and interventional radiology neuroradiology and nuclear medicine.

The Ruhr-Epileptology a leading epilepsy center is also housed here. It’s a regional and national referral center. It provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for epilepsy and seizure disorders. This impressive facility serves over 22000 inpatient and 50000 outpatient cases yearly.

The Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer Universitaetsklinik stands as a testament to medical innovation. It combines cutting-edge technology with a long tradition of care. Its history is intertwined with the history of the Ruhr region. It continues to serve the community it was built to protect. This place is more than just a hospital.
