Stones stand silently. They whisper stories of monks, wars, and artistic inspiration at Klosterruine Eldena. This ruin is more than just old stones. It is a landmark of Greifswald.

Klosterruine Eldena began as Hilda Monastery in 1199. Cistercian monks founded it. They moved here after conflict forced them from Dargun. The monastery thrived and became the region’s economic and spiritual heart. By 1400, it reached its peak.

Around 1533, the Reformation changed everything. The monastery fell into disrepair. In 1634, the University of Greifswald gained control of the grounds. The Thirty Years’ War brought further damage. Imperial and Swedish troops plundered the site. People used the stones as a quarry for new buildings.

But Klosterruine Eldena’s story did not end there.

In the 19th century, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia intervened. He admired the Romantic ideals associated with the site. In 1827, he saw the ruins’ poor condition. Restoration began between 1828 and 1832. A park was created. Oak trees replaced missing nave pillars.

Caspar David Friedrich, a Greifswald native, immortalized Klosterruine Eldena in his paintings. His art made the ruins world-famous. Friedrich captured the ruins from many angles. He used them as models in works like “Winter” and “Abbey in the Oakwood.” His paintings evoke feelings of transience, historical greatness, and Christian piety.

Today, the imposing west facade still stands as the main attraction. Visitors explore the park. They walk the Caspar David Friedrich Picture Trail. Klosterruine Eldena is also a stop on the European Route of Brick Gothic.

The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald have owned the site since 1937. It is a popular recreation area. Events take place here. These include theater performances and the Eldena Monastery Market.

As you stand here, remember the monks. Think of the artists. Imagine the battles. Klosterruine Eldena connects us to the past. It inspires us in the present. Its stones continue to tell their timeless story.
