Picture the imposing silhouette of Kloster Michelsberg. It stands proudly atop its namesake hill overlooking Bamberg. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to centuries of history.

Kloster Michelsberg a former Benedictine monastery holds a special place in Bamberg’s heart. Founded in 1015 by Bishop Eberhard I it was initially the bishop’s private monastery. The abbot reported directly to the Bishop of Bamberg. Monks came from Amorbach and Fulda Abbeys.

Heinrich II supported the abbey generously. He donated lands and properties. Three books from this initial endowment remain in the Staatsbibliothek Bamberg. The abbey embraced the Hirsau Reforms resulting in a new church. Frutolf of Michelsberg a chronicler and author served as prior until his death in 1103. The abbey thrived under Bishop Otto. His burial in the abbey church and subsequent canonisation in 1189 significantly increased the abbey’s independence from the bishops. Under Abbot Wolfram the monastery reached its peak with 70 monks. This was a huge increase from the 20 under his predecessor.

The abbey’s wealth came from its vast landholdings. It owned 441 towns and villages. This made it one of the most culturally important Benedictine abbeys in southern Germany. Its scriptorium was especially renowned for its work. However the abbey’s history wasn’t without its challenges. Around 1420 a decline led to reform attempts. Hussites sacked the abbey in 1430. In 1435 townspeople plundered it. In 1446 its debt forced the bishop to depose the abbot. A thorough reform only occurred under Bishop Georg I von Schaumberg.

The Thirty Years’ War saw Swedish occupation. The 17th and 18th centuries brought recovery and prosperity. Abbot Christoph Ernst von Guttenberg restored its finances laying the groundwork for future building projects. The agricultural buildings were added in phases. Leonhard Dientzenhofer and his brother Johann expanded the abbey. This gave it a fortress-like appearance.

The abbey church’s history is equally fascinating. The first church dedicated to Saint Michael was built around 1015. It was consecrated in 1021. An earthquake in 1117 led to its rebuilding on a larger scale. The new Romanesque church was consecrated in 1121. Bishop Otto was buried there in 1139. A fire in 1610 destroyed the roofs and nave. Rebuilding in Renaissance style started immediately. Leonhard Dientzenhofer added a Baroque facade. Johann Dientzenhofer built the terrace and high choir. The current church largely reflects the changes made under Abbot Anselm Geisendorfer. The colorful facade painting and statuary were removed in 1833. In 1837 gravestones were moved from the cathedral. The interior was renovated in 1952. Repair work on the roofs finished in 2002.

Secularization in 1802 saw Bavarian troops confiscate the abbey’s assets. The abbey was dissolved in 1803. The buildings became a retirement home. Today the church remains closed for extensive restoration. But Kloster Michelsberg’s story continues to captivate. It’s a place where history unfolds before your very eyes a true treasure of Bamberg.
