“A Palast der Gesundheit” they called it. This imposing structure before you is the Klinikum Südstadt Rostock. Imagine its opening in 1965. A revolutionary hospital for its time in East Germany.
The Klinikum Südstadt Rostock wasn’t just any hospital. It was the first new hospital built in the entire DDR. It boasted features unheard of then. Central sterilization and bed preparation were innovations. Patients enjoyed single to four-bed rooms a luxury. A system connected nurses and patients instantly. Another system allowed patients to call for help with voice transmission.
This wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. The polyclinic had top-notch equipment and staff. The physiotherapy and hydrotherapy department was exceptionally well-equipped. It even included a therapy pool. A trauma center handled all specialties and integrated rapid medical aid. Ambulances with emergency physicians were on hand.
The Klinikum Südstadt Rostock was efficient. Thanks to improved organization and technology its 557 beds rivaled hospitals twice its size. Patient stays decreased significantly. From an average of 27 days to a mere 14 days. This allowed the hospital to serve 400000 people by 1966.
The Klinikum Südstadt Rostock continued to evolve. In 1998 there was a restructuring of clinics in Rostock. Urology pediatrics and gynecology were affected. In 2004 the city’s two women’s clinics merged. This created one of Germany’s largest women’s and maternity hospitals.
Further advancements followed. A new functional building was completed in 2005. This involved a complete renovation modernization and expansion of the entire hospital. A smaller addition housed a heart catheterization lab since 2009. This expanded the diagnostic and therapeutic offerings of internal medicine.
Quality assurance remained a priority. In 2013 oncology centers for colon gynecological and breast cancer received certifications. These met German Cancer Society standards and DIN EN ISO 90012008 standards. Intensive care and the intermediate care unit were modernized in 2014. A new operating room also opened then.
The Klinikum Südstadt Rostock has always aimed for seamless cooperation. This included inpatient outpatient and functional areas. This ambitious goal was already partially achieved in the 1970s. This ambulatory-inpatient collaboration is now a standard in healthcare policy.
