Around Kliestow’s church a palpable sense of history hangs heavy in the air. This isn’t just any church. It’s the heart of Kliestow a village now part of Frankfurt Oder. Its story is woven into the very stones.

Kliestow’s church boasts a history stretching back to the 13th century. The nave a fine example of early Gothic architecture is built of carefully hewn fieldstones. Notice the larger stones forming a sturdy base. The mortar was originally smoothed downwards. Two early Gothic lancet windows survive. So does a pointed arch portal. These are whispers of Kliestow’s medieval past.

Kliestow’s tumultuous history is reflected in its church. The Thirty Years’ War ravaged the village. Only the church survived the devastation. Swedish Russian and Austrian troops all marched through. The church stood defiant. Its sturdy granite construction ensured its survival. Later the church endured World War II. Miraculously it was not destroyed.

Inside the church a late Classical altar piece catches the eye. It depicts Christ on the cross. The pulpit is also from the late Classical period. But look up. Hanging from the ceiling is a rather unusual baptismal angel. Its head is tilted dramatically downwards. It may have once held a banner in its raised right hand. Now it holds a small shell. The angel’s unusual position and its simple carving hint at a local craftsman from the early 18th century.

The church’s organ deserves mention. Built in 1819-20 by Carl Friedrich Baltzer it originally lacked a pedal. Later modifications added one. It is a testament to the community’s dedication.

Kliestow wasn’t just a village of faith. It had an active coal mining industry in the late 19th century. The Grube Vaterland mine operated until 1925. To transport its coal Kliestow gained a connection to the Prussian Eastern Railway. The old railway embankment is still visible today. Sadly the tracks are gone. They were removed after 1945. They became reparations for the Soviet Union.

Kliestow’s history is a story of resilience. It’s a story of survival against the odds. This little church stands as a powerful symbol. A symbol of faith perseverance and a strong community spirit. It is a monument to a village that has endured through centuries of conflict and change. Remember Kliestow as you leave. Remember its resilience. Remember its enduring spirit.
