“Red.” That is the first word that comes to mind as we approach the Klenteng. It is a striking hue that dominates the structure’s facade. The Klenteng is a captivating sight.

The Klenteng that stands before us is not just any temple. It is part of the Vihara Budhi Bhakti complex. This complex is known as the oldest Buddhist temple in Batam. The Klenteng is a place where multiple beliefs converge. It serves those of the Konghucu faith and followers of Tri Dharma.

This Tua Pek Kong Bio Chinese Temple was inaugurated in 1986. However construction started in the 1970s. Local Batam authorities officiated the opening. Since then, it has drawn visitors from many countries. These include Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. They come to admire its beauty and seek blessings.

Notice the architecture. It is heavily influenced by Chinese designs. Lanterns hang from the ceilings. The predominant red color makes it resemble a Chinese temple. The building stands out with its unique charm.

Inside, you will find a small garden. It features statues of various deities. These include Buddha Maitreya and Dewi Kuan Im. Reliefs of gods and goddesses adorn the temple walls. A pagoda stands proudly in front. Beside it is a Chinese temple known as Kuil Khong Hu Chu.

The Vihara consists of two main buildings. The Klenteng is at the front. The Vihara building is set slightly further back. The Klenteng is for Konghucu worshippers or those of Tri Dharma. The Vihara caters to Buddhists.

The red-colored Klenteng features a distinct Chinese interior. The Vihara building appears majestic in white. The Klenteng has several sections. Each worship space is dedicated to a different deity. Paintings and reliefs of gods decorate the front walls of the main building.

Two sets of stairs lead to the worship area on the second floor. Inside the Vihara, the main prayer room houses various deities. The devout come here seeking blessings. Many believe their prayers are answered. This belief draws locals and tourists alike. Visitors often describe a sense of peace and comfort.

The Tua Pek Kong Bio Chinese Temple shows characteristics of Chinese buildings. The architecture is similar to temples in Bali. It is easily accessible. The building materials include iron, ceramics and concrete. There is no dou gong. Factors such as politics, social aspects and building technology influenced the architecture.
