Kleistpark

In the heart of Frankfurt (Oder), a tranquil oasis awaits. This is Kleistpark. It’s a place where rustling leaves whisper tales of the past. Children’s laughter mingles with the echoes of history. Kleistpark wasn’t always a park. It began its life in 1802 as the city’s western cemetery. Imagine mourners traversing its paths, bidding farewell to loved ones. The park carries the name of Frankfurt’s most famous son, Heinrich von Kleist. This renaming happened in 1953, during the anniversary celebrations of Frankfurt’s first documented mention. Kleistpark is about six hectares. It offers beautiful trees, sprawling lawns, and playgrounds. A cable car delights younger visitors. The park’s history is etched into its landscape. It once held the tomb of Ulrike von Kleist, the poet’s relative. The organ builder Wilhelm Sauer and Wilhelm Spieker, founder of the “Patriotisches Wochenblatt,” also rested here. Time hasn’t been entirely kind to Kleistpark. World War II brought devastation. The early 1950s saw its transformation into a public park. The construction of a highway in the 1970s further reduced its size. The eastern section, the oldest part of the former cemetery, now lies beneath high-rise buildings.
