Have you ever wondered what life was like for Prussian royalty? Well, step right up and let me whisk you back in time. Right before you stands the Kleine Schloss, also known as the Damenhaus – a small castle with a big history. Built in the 19th century, this picturesque building was once a coveted home for Prussian princes and princesses.

Imagine yourself transported to the 1840s, a time of elegance and grandeur. This wasn’t just any ordinary home – it boasted a unique Tudor Gothic style, with its charming gables and pointed arches. The castle, nestled among the trees of Babelsberg Park, was the perfect spot for a relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle of court life.

Once upon a time, the castle served as a home for Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, who later went on to become Kaiser Friedrich III. Can you picture him strolling through the gardens, or perhaps taking a break from his royal duties with a cup of coffee in the castle’s cozy parlor? He later married Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Victoria, adding even more royal flair to the Damenhaus.

After the prince moved on, the castle was nicknamed the “Damenhaus” – that’s German for “Ladies’ House.” The reason for this name is quite charming. You see, the castle became the residence of Countess Luise von Oriola, one of Queen Augusta’s ladies-in-waiting. She found peace and tranquility in this enchanting castle, enjoying its beautiful surroundings and the company of other notable women of the day.

A fascinating fact about the Kleine Schloss is that it has seen a variety of occupants over the years. After serving as a residence for royalty and court ladies, the castle transformed into a home for the famous composer and conductor Hans Chemin-Petit. He occupied the castle for over a decade, from 1934 to 1945.

And then, in the post-war years, the castle became a resting place for employees of DEFA, the state-owned film studio of East Germany. The castle even had a stint as a restaurant, where guests could enjoy delicious meals while taking in views of the serene Tiefen See. Who knows what stories the walls of this castle could tell?

Today, the castle continues to be a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The lower floor is a welcoming restaurant, while the upper level offers a taste of history in the form of two apartments. So, take a moment to step back in time and imagine life in the Kleine Schloss.
