Kleiner Wannsee

On the tranquil shores of Kleiner Wannsee, a tale unfolds. A story of contrasting currents, where history and nature intertwine. Kleiner Wannsee lies nestled in southwest Berlin, a smaller sibling to the sprawling Großer Wannsee. It connects the larger lake to the Pohlesee, a vital link in the Griebnitzkanal waterway. This waterway is part of the Teltowkanal, a crucial artery in Berlin’s water network. The flow of water here is a dance between two partners. Primarily, water flows from the Teltowkanal, through Kleiner Wannsee, and into Großer Wannsee. Yet, like any good partnership, the flow sometimes reverses. This constant exchange keeps the water fresh and vibrant. Kleiner Wannsee isn’t just a body of water. It’s a stage where history has played out. Before the villas and rowing clubs, Kleiner Wannsee and Pohlesee shared a less glamorous name: Stolpsches Loch, or Stolper Loch. This name, referencing the nearby village of Stolpe, was deemed unsuitable for the emerging upscale villa colony. Thus, a renaming occurred. The original Wannsee became Großer Wannsee, and Stolpsches Loch transformed into Kleiner Wannsee. The shores of Kleiner Wannsee are largely private. Grand estates with lush gardens line the waterfront. Access to the shoreline is limited. This exclusivity adds to the lake’s mystique, making it a hidden gem within Berlin. Tucked away on the eastern bank, accessible from Bismarckstraße, lies a poignant reminder of a tragic love story. Here, beneath the shade of trees, is the grave of Heinrich von Kleist and Henriette Vogel. This spot, where they chose to end their lives in 1811, is now a place of quiet remembrance. The grave, renovated in 2011, the 200th anniversary of Kleist’s death, offers a moment of reflection amidst the serene beauty of Kleiner Wannsee. While the grand villas dominate the shoreline, Kleiner Wannsee is also a haven for sports enthusiasts, especially rowers. Four rowing clubs call this lake home, their boats gliding across the water, adding another layer to the lake’s dynamic character. Kleiner Wannsee is more than just a lake.
