Hidden within Frankfurt’s Niederrad district stands the Kleine Kirche. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. This Baroque gem is more than just a pretty face. It’s a living testament to faith and resilience.

The Kleine Kirche also known as the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche wasn’t always the stately structure we see today. Niederrad a small village first mentioned in 1151 was initially served by the Bartholomäus Church. Imagine the journey for the villagers. They had to cross the Main River by boat to attend services. This changed somewhat in 1608. A small timber-framed church appeared in Niederrad. However it functioned solely as a Sunday school.

The present Kleine Kirche however dates back to 1726. This is the building that survived the ravages of war. It’s the church you’re looking at right now. World War II severely damaged the Kleine Kirche. It underwent a simplified reconstruction from 1951 to 1952. This was under the direction of the architect Hans Bartolmes.

Look closely at the architecture. The Kleine Kirche is a hall church with a three-sided choir. Note the two round-arch windows on each of its long walls. The steep slate roof is crowned on the north side with a small tower which houses the bells.

Step inside. Notice the stained-glass windows. These are a testament to artistic talent. They were crafted by Lina von Schauroth between the two World Wars. The altar and pulpit are the work of the architect who oversaw the reconstruction. A historic crucifix hangs above the altar. More modern round-arch windows flank the altar. These were created by the artist couple Gisela Dreher-Richels and Gerhard Dreher.

The Kleine Kirche’s organ is a marvel in itself. Built in 1971 by Günter Ismayr it boasts 13 registers and two manuals. It’s a perfect accompaniment to the hymns of Paul Gerhardt. The church was named after this significant Protestant hymn writer in 1926.

The Kleine Kirche isn’t just a building. It’s a place of worship a symbol of community and a piece of Frankfurt’s living history. It’s a reminder that faith and architecture can endure even the harshest tests of time. So take a moment. Absorb the story. Let the quiet dignity of the Kleine Kirche speak to you.
