Have you ever gazed upon a place that whispers tales of forgotten times? Standing before the Klein Kreutz Church, you feel its history and presence. This enchanting village, a part of Brandenburg an der Havel, has been a sanctuary for centuries. Its name, derived from the Old Polabian language, means “place where pears grow”. Once a Slavic settlement, its first mention in historical records dates back to 1320 as “Crucewitz”. For centuries, Klein Kreutz belonged to Neustadt Brandenburg. It was only in 1950 that it became part of Brandenburg an der Havel, only to regain its independence as a community in 1952. However, in 1993 it was finally incorporated into Brandenburg again. Its history is punctuated by two devastating fires, in 1778 and 1823, that wiped out parts of the village. The 1823 fire even destroyed the old manor, which was subsequently rebuilt to the north, a testament to the resilience of its people. The Klein Kreutz Church, a symbol of strength and faith, is testimony to the community’s spirit. Built in 1867-1868 on the site of a previous church, it is a mixture of neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles. The church’s tower, however, is a preserved remnant of the earlier structure. But Klein Kreutz holds more secrets. The Weinmeisterhaus, a winemaker’s house with a stable and vineyard, dating back to 1870, is also a well-preserved historical treasure. The vineyard, part of a larger wine-growing area, was established around 1525, reflecting Klein Kreutz’s agricultural past. Today, traces of the old terraces and fruit trees remain, whispering tales of a bygone era. The vineyards of Klein Kreutz were once a source of immense pride for the community, providing sustenance and contributing to the region’s economy. The house, however, has a history that stretches back further than its 1870 construction, with an old cellar predating the present structure, a silent witness to time’s passage. The village’s past is not only embodied in its churches and houses but also in its people. Imagine the generations who have called Klein Kreutz home, their lives intertwined with this peaceful spot. Their stories are etched in the very fabric of the village, waiting to be unearthed. Today, Klein Kreutz stands as a picture of tranquility, inviting visitors to step back in time and discover the stories woven into its history. Whether you seek solace in its church, find pleasure in its preserved architecture, or simply wish to feel a moment’s peace in its quiet charm, a visit provides a unique insight into the rich heritage of Brandenburg.
