Completed in 1958, the Klang Gates Dam stands before us as Malaysia’s first dam for water supply. It is also known as the Bukit Tabur Dam. Look closely at its concrete arch design. Notice the spillway at its center.

This ridge is unique. It has four types of quartz formations. The ridge supports diverse vegetation. At least 265 plant species thrive here. Five of these are endemic. The rare serow, a mountain goat, also calls this ridge home.

The Klang Gates Dam faced challenges in 2014. A water crisis caused its capacity to drop. It went down to 54%. This provided only 80 days of water supply.

The Klang River flows into the Klang Gates Dam. This river gets its name from the Mon-Khmer word “Klong”. “Klong” means warehouse. Klang was once a vital maritime town. It had many shipping warehouses.

Back in the 1960s until the late 1990s, the Klang Gates Dam was a recreational spot. Locals hiked to the spillway. They swam in the pool below. The pool had a white sandy bottom. Native freshwater fish like kelah and sebarau swam there.

The Klang Gates Dam is one of seven dams. These dams feed into 34 water treatment plants. They supply water to regions including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.
