Completed in 1958, the Klang Gates Dam stands before us as Malaysia’s first dam for water supply. It is also known as the Bukit Tabur Dam. Look closely at its concrete arch design. Notice the spillway at its center.

The Klang Gates Dam is more than just a structure. It’s a critical source of drinking water. It serves residents of the Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur. The dam’s water storage capacity is impressive. It holds 25,104 million liters. The Bukit Nanas water treatment plant relies on this reservoir. It produces 145 million liters of treated water daily.

Beside the Klang Gates Dam, take in the view of Klang Gate Ridge. It is the largest quartz ridge in the world. This ridge is split into Bukit Tabur West and Bukit Tabur East. The ridge stretches 22km long. It is also 200m wide.

This ridge is unique. It has four types of quartz formations. The ridge supports diverse vegetation. At least 265 plant species thrive here. Five of these are endemic. The rare serow, a mountain goat, also calls this ridge home.

The Klang Gates Dam faced challenges in 2014. A water crisis caused its capacity to drop. It went down to 54%. This provided only 80 days of water supply.

The Klang River flows into the Klang Gates Dam. This river gets its name from the Mon-Khmer word “Klong”. “Klong” means warehouse. Klang was once a vital maritime town. It had many shipping warehouses.

Back in the 1960s until the late 1990s, the Klang Gates Dam was a recreational spot. Locals hiked to the spillway. They swam in the pool below. The pool had a white sandy bottom. Native freshwater fish like kelah and sebarau swam there.

The Klang Gates Dam is one of seven dams. These dams feed into 34 water treatment plants. They supply water to regions including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.

Remember that water is essential. Up to 14,000 liters of water make just one smartphone. Everyone is a water polluter. Therefore, everyone is responsible for keeping our water clean.

As you stand here at the Klang Gates Dam, consider its history. Think about its role in providing water. Reflect on our responsibility to protect this vital resource. The Klang Gates Dam stands as a testament to engineering. It also highlights our connection to the natural world.
