Journey back in time with me to the 18th century, as we stand before the Kittoch Bridge. This bridge carries the B759 road across Kittoch Water. It stands as a testament to Glasgow’s evolving history.

The Kittoch Bridge wasn’t always as you see it now. Its story is etched in stone. It speaks of alterations, realignments, and the needs of a growing community. The bridge spans both Glasgow City and East Renfrewshire.

Look closely at the bridge’s fabric. You will see two main builds. The earliest dates back to the first half of the 18th century. This original arch is nearest to the west. In the second half of the 18th century, something significant happened. The roadway was doubled in width to approximately 20 feet on the east side. Notice the droved ashlar soffit, a mark of that era’s craftsmanship.

But the Kittoch Bridge’s story doesn’t end there. In 1884, further changes were made. These alterations lessened the skew of the roadway. Subsidiary arches were added on either side. They are keyed in above the voussoirs. Two diagonally opposing abutments were re-clad to support the realigned roadway. The parapets, also from 1884, showcase vermiculated ashlar with raised terminal piers.

The 1884 datestone on the Kittoch Bridge is a proud declaration of these changes. It is a record of the efforts to adapt and improve this vital crossing. The Kittoch Bridge is more than just a structure. It is a living document of Glasgow’s past. It links not only places but also eras. It reminds us that even the most solid-seeming things evolve with time. The Kittoch Bridge is designated as a Category C listed building. This designation acknowledges its special architectural and historic interest. It ensures that this piece of Glasgow’s heritage is protected for generations to come. So, as we stand on the Kittoch Bridge, let us appreciate not only its physical presence but also the layers of history it embodies.
