Gazing across Kit Carson Park, can you imagine Kit Carson himself traversing this very valley? Kit Carson Park, a sprawling 285-acre park in Escondido, California, bears the name of the legendary scout who guided Captain John C. Frémont across the Sierra Nevada. The park is nestled about 5 miles west of the Battle of San Pasqual, where Carson fought. A monument commemorating the battle stands on Mule Hill, just a short distance southeast from here. The City of Escondido acquired the land for Kit Carson Park from San Diego in 1967. It’s Escondido’s largest park, a recreational hub with something for everyone. About 100 acres have been developed for sports and activities, while 185 acres remain as natural habitat. Within Kit Carson Park, you’ll find lighted fields for baseball, softball, and soccer. There are tennis courts, a skate park, a disc golf course, and picnic areas. Two lakes grace the park, Tree Lake and another, formerly known as Duck Lake. Duck Lake has succumbed to eutrophication and now exists as a marsh, filled with cattails, bulrushes, and smartweed. Hidden within the park is the Iris Sankey Arboretum, a five-acre haven surrounding the Queen Califia’s Magical Circle sculpture garden. Created by French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, the garden houses nine large sculptures. It’s a magical place, but check the park’s schedule, as it’s open only a few hours each week. Kit Carson Park also features hiking trails that wind through coastal sage scrub, riparian vegetation, and forested areas. You might spot red-winged blackbirds near Tree Lake or see cormorants, gulls, and egrets at Eagle Scout Lake. From sports fields to serene nature trails, Kit Carson Park truly offers a diverse experience.
