Originally a movie palace, the Culver Theatre seated 1160. It was part of Hollywood’s golden age near the MGM and Columbia Pictures studios.
But entertainment shifted north. The theater aged.
Fast forward to 2004. An $8 million restoration transformed the Culver into the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
Anne and Kirk Douglas contributed generously. The Culver City Redevelopment Agency also helped.
Today the Kirk Douglas Theatre has a 317-seat auditorium. There is also a multi-purpose space. While the interior lost its original touches, the exterior retains its charm.

The theater’s four-sided name tower stands out. The terrazzo floral motif complements the design. George Skouras designed the original theater.
Now part of Center Theatre Group, the Kirk Douglas Theatre thrives. It joins the Ahmanson and Mark Taper Forum.
