Timeworn stones stand before you. This is Kirk Arbory a place steeped in history. It’s more than just a church. It’s a living testament to the Isle of Man’s rich past.

Kirk Arbory’s dedication is unique. It’s dedicated to not one but two saints. St Cairpre of Coleraine and St Columba share this sacred space. The name itself evolved. From Kirk Carbery to Kirk Arbory by 1703 a subtle shift reflecting changing times.

The building materials speak volumes. Built of limestone it was once whitewashed. Now a grey pebble dash covers its ancient walls. A dovecot tourelle once topped the church. Two bells chimed from its heights. A bell tower was added in 1915. Some say it doesn’t quite fit the original design.

The churchyard holds stories. Many memorials stand to the Stevenson and Maddrell families. Dr Clague author of Manx Reminiscences rests here. His words echo the parish’s past. New sections were added. In 1885 to the north in 1923 to the left of the path.

Nearby lies a fascinating fragment. A former public house. Then two cottages. Finally transformed into a church in 1880. It was Colby Mission Church then Belle Abbey. Now another chapter in Kirk Arbory’s story.

Even older remains are here. A Franciscan Monastery chapel dating back to 1367. Built on an older Celtic site. The masonry resembles 14th-century work at Castle Rushen. The monastery’s dissolution in 1540 ended its monastic life. Yet its stones remain. They now rest under Manx National Heritage’s care.

Kirk Arbory is more than stones and saints. It’s a place of fairs and festivals. A periwinkle fair once thrived here on Shrove Tuesday. Periwinkles and gingerbread were sold. The sounds of laughter and bargaining must have echoed through the village.
