Did the ground beneath Kirche Willinghusen ever feel the splash of playful feet? It’s hard to believe now, as we stand before this serene church in Willinghusen, but this sacred ground was once a lively village pond. Imagine children splashing in the shallows, horses and carriages navigating the muddy edges, and villagers gathering around the water’s edge. Old photographs from the 1920s capture these scenes. They show Willinghusen residents ankle-deep in water right where the church now stands. The pond was the lowest point in Willinghusen, a natural collector of rainwater. The church, with its distinctive tower now a landmark of Willinghusen, replaced this communal gathering spot. Inside the small church, stained-glass windows cast colorful patterns, a beautiful backdrop for the numerous weddings held here. The adjacent community center hosts confirmation classes, while children play on a wooden ark in the garden. The church remains a central hub, a place where the community connects. Pastorin Kirsten Schmidt-Soltau, who served the Evangelical congregation here for eleven years, once said, “Church, fire station, and school – these are the important places in town. This is where people meet, where things happen.” She even traded jobs with a local mechanic for a week to emphasize that her work wasn’t just a Sunday affair. He wrote the sermon, while she donned overalls and changed oil. This earned her the respect of the Willinghusen community, though she ultimately returned to her pastoral duties. Although the pond is gone, the occasional flooding reminds residents of the past. Pastorin Schmidt-Soltau recalled a time when her family’s parsonage flooded while they were on vacation. Neighbors and friends rallied to save their belongings. This act of kindness highlights the spirit of Willinghusen. People look out for each other. It’s a place where children can play freely, and a sense of community thrives.
