The soaring copper roof gleams. It catches the Berlin sun. This is Kirche Neu-Westend a testament to postwar resilience.

Kirche Neu-Westend isn’t just a church. It’s a story woven into the fabric of Westend. Born from the ashes of war it rose in 1960. It stands proudly at Eichenallee 47. The architects Konrad Sage and Karl Hebecker designed it. They masterfully integrated it into existing buildings. The church stands as a symbol of faith and community. It emerged from a time of rebuilding and hope.

Before this magnificent structure stood a temporary church. It was a simple brick building. This earlier church served the community. It was a vital space for worship. The original plans called for a church on Branitzer Platz. This was once called Kirchplatz. However Charlottenburg city rejected the idea.

Kirche Neu-Westend’s design is striking. It’s a steel-concrete skeleton. The trapezoidal base transforms into a heptagon. The copper roof extends beyond the nave. Ten triangular dormers adorn the northeast roof. These let morning sunlight illuminate the altar. A wash-concrete wall shields the church. It’s a beautiful yet functional design.

The church’s interior is a masterpiece of raw materials. The exposed steel skeleton is breathtaking. The unplastered ceiling is striking. The patterned terrazzo floor is unique. African Mansonia wood graces the altar wall. It creates a warm contrast against the concrete. The church has a raised altar and a pulpit. These elements were all designed by the architects. It speaks to a unique vision of modern church design.

The organ is a significant feature. It is elevated near the altar. Its placement follows the Wiesbadener Program. This program advocated for the organ’s prominence within the congregation. The original Walcker organ was replaced in 1966. The new organ has 25 registers. It features a mechanical action. Its size slightly obscures some of the triangular windows.

The bell tower is a remarkable aspect of Kirche Neu-Westend. It’s integrated between the church and a kindergarten. A unique metal structure surrounds the bell chamber. It houses three bronze bells. Installed in 1958 these bells were recast after the original tower’s collapse in 1993. The tower’s reconstruction in 1994 was faithful to the original design.

Each Christmas Eve since 1959 a special event takes place. Hundreds gather for the Turm Blasen. This late-night bell-ringing is a cherished tradition.

Kirche Neu-Westend is more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Berlin. It is a place of worship. It is a community hub. It’s a remarkable piece of architectural history. It invites you to reflect on the past and hope for the future.
