Unconventional yet striking that’s Kirche Mümmelmannsberg. This isn’t your grandmother’s church. Located in the heart of Hamburg’s Mümmelmannsberg housing estate it stands as a testament to 1970s church architecture. Forget towering spires and ornate details. This church is different.

Designed by architects Grundmann Rehder and Zeuner it was completed in 1976. The design won a competition in 1973. It’s actually two buildings separated by a long plaza. One houses the pastor’s residence apartments and guest rooms. The larger eastern building is where the magic happens. It houses the church hall youth rooms a kindergarten a senior center and community spaces. Only the kindergarten has its own entrance. Everything else is linked by a central two-level foyer.

From the outside it could almost be anything. A school a swimming pool or even a convention center. It’s intentionally unconventional. There’s no traditional tower or church bells. That’s what makes Kirche Mümmelmannsberg so unique. The exterior is covered in colorful enamel plates. Sculptor Hans Kock created the facade. The vibrant colors and stylized forms set it apart from the surrounding buildings. The design incorporates both religious imagery like a cross near the Havighorster Redder and everyday motifs like clouds.

Inside Hans Kock’s influence is even stronger. He sculpted the altar baptismal font and pulpit in aluminum. He also designed the concrete reliefs and wood paneling in the sanctuary. The sanctuary reflects the exterior’s motifs. Colorful organic forms lead to the altar. Lighting and a side gallery with exposed concrete relief highlight the altar area. Surprisingly there’s no organ a traditional fixture in most churches.

The church’s design emphasizes flexibility. Walls can be moved to adapt to different needs. Even the main liturgical pieces aren’t fixed. They’re easily moved to suit various arrangements. This reflects a desire for multi-functional spaces. The altar itself is deliberately lightweight and delicate. Kock wanted to break away from traditional massive altars. Originally a large crucifix was planned but the congregation didn’t approve it. Now it hangs in the Kreuzkirche in Büdelsdorf.

Kirche Mümmelmannsberg is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community center a vibrant hub for people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s a unique example of artistic ambition in church design. A bold statement that defies traditional notions of what a church should be. It’s an unconventional church. A place where faith and community blend beautifully. A testament to the creative vision of its designers. A place that’s definitely worth exploring.
