Gazing upon Kirche Kunnersdorf, can you sense the echoes of history? Kirche Kunnersdorf stands as a testament to time. It has witnessed centuries of change in this serene corner of Schöpstal. This seemingly simple church, built between 1788 and 1791, replaced an older structure, quietly marking the passage of time. The church we see today is a large, unadorned hall church. Its grandeur lies in its simplicity. Kirche Kunnersdorf’s towering presence is accentuated by the high hipped roof. The roof, adorned with charming bat dormers, shelters the five-bay rectangular nave. Large, two-story arched windows bathe the interior in natural light. In 1992, the church’s tower underwent a significant restoration. More recently, in 2016, the entire roof was newly covered, ensuring Kirche Kunnersdorf’s preservation for future generations. The tower, a prominent feature of Kirche Kunnersdorf, is attached to the south wall. It boasts a plastered corner ashlar and is crowned by a distinctive cupola with an open octagonal lantern. A small porch and a single-story sacristy, complete with segmental arched entrance portals, nestle at the base of the tower. Inside Kirche Kunnersdorf, simplicity reigns. The flat-ceilinged hall features a two-story gallery that wraps around the walls, embracing the congregation. Much of the church’s interior furnishings date back to its construction era. The imposing wooden pulpit altar, adorned with fluted half-columns and composite capitals, commands attention. Above the altar table, a tulip-shaped pulpit with a shallow canopy stands ready to deliver inspiring sermons. A sandstone baptismal font adds a touch of rustic charm. The organ, believed to be the work of Gustav Heinze, fills the sacred space with music. Kirche Kunnersdorf’s history is intertwined with the surrounding community. It evolved from a chapel under the jurisdiction of the Ebersbach Church of St. Barbara. Following the Reformation around 1545, Kunnersdorf gained its own parish. Today, the parish encompasses Liebstein, Siebenhufen, and Torga, binding these villages together under Kirche Kunnersdorf’s spiritual guidance. Interestingly, despite its proximity to Görlitz, Kirche Kunnersdorf was assigned to the Rothenburg I church district in 1818. This placed it under the Evangelical Church of the older Provinces of Prussia until 1945. Afterward, it became part of the Evangelical Church of Silesia, later renamed the Evangelical Church of the Silesian Upper Lusatia. Through various administrative shifts and mergers, Kirche Kunnersdorf finally found its place within the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia in 2004. Today, it stands as a symbol of continuity and faith, a beacon in the landscape of Schöpstal.
