Kirche Kleinolbersdorf

Could a church rise from ashes in a mere nine months? Here at the Kirche Kleinolbersdorf, it did. This isn’t the first church to grace this spot. Its predecessor, a 500-year-old romanesque wooden church, met a fiery end. But from the ashes, in 1789, the current Kirche Kleinolbersdorf emerged, a testament to resilience. This early Classicist structure is no lavish cathedral. It possesses a simple elegance, a spacious sanctuary with twin galleries and a prominent Kanzelaltar. The church underwent significant internal renovations for its bicentennial. More recently, in 2018-2019, the exterior was restored. Additions like the west gable’s funeral hall and the heating house behind the sacristy were removed. This revealed the church’s original form. A treasure survived the fire that consumed the old church: an altarpiece. Crafted around 1500 by Peter Breuer, sometimes called the “Saxon Riemenschneider,” it depicts Saints Martin, Fabius, and Laurentius. The wings showcase Saint Valentine, Saint Benedict, and the Annunciation. Some believe Hans Hesse may have painted these images. Another gem resides within Kirche Kleinolbersdorf: its organ. Originally built in 1693 for a church in Seelitz, it’s one of Saxony’s four oldest organs. It found its home here in 1797. The organ underwent meticulous restoration in 2003 by the Herrmann Eule organ builders of Bautzen. Kirche Kleinolbersdorf has seen ongoing care. A security system was installed in 2003. The heating system was upgraded in 2006-2007. In 2014, the bell tower was reinforced and its steel bell frame replaced with a wooden one.
