The Freiburg Branch, as it was known, had a history dating back to 1927, experiencing periods of growth and decline. By 1939, only Karl Becker, his wife Elisabeth, and their daughter Rosemarie remained. Despite this, Karl Becker remained devoted, working with a local printer who produced the Church’s German publication, “Der Stern.” The printer and his wife subsequently converted, bringing the Freiburg Branch membership to five. During the war, the Freiburg Branch, though small, continued its activities. District President Kurt Schneider, often accompanied by a chauffeur, visited the Beckers. Cottage meetings were held in their home, and connections were maintained with other branches in nearby cities. Tragedy struck on November 27, 1944, when an air raid devastated Freiburg. Elisabeth Becker was among the thousands killed. Despite his grief, Karl Becker’s faith remained unshaken. He even offered a prayer at the mass grave where his wife was buried, asking for her spiritual strength to continue serving. The war brought further challenges, making regular meetings impossible. Yet, the Freiburg Branch persevered, holding meetings whenever possible. The branch records, hidden during the final months of the war, were retrieved after the Allied occupation in April 1945. A visit from an American soldier, Lieutenant Wilhelm Kenneth Firmage, brought news and greetings from the Church’s headquarters in America. This visit marked a turning point, and the Freiburg Branch was officially reestablished. From a small group of five in 1939, the Freiburg Branch grew, witnessing twenty-one baptisms by 1948, demonstrating the resilience of the human spirit and the strength of their beliefs.
