Care to discover a church without walls? Kirche im Vauban stands as a testament to faith in a modern, secular world. This isn’t your traditional church building. It is a Christian presence within Freiburg’s unique Vauban district.
Vauban is known as a model for sustainable urban living. Every day, visitors come from around the globe. They want to see its innovative approach to community and environment. But, surprisingly, this district of over 5500 residents lacks a formal church building. Less than half of the population identifies with Christianity. Many have no religious affiliation at all.
Back in 1992, when Vauban was being developed on former military grounds, the churches’ involvement was hesitant. Residents wanted an ecumenical center in the district’s heart. However, church authorities initially said no. The Protestant and Catholic believers were assigned to different ecclesiastical areas. This hindered cooperation between the denominations.
But, a dedicated group of women formed the “AK Kirchenträume.” They are also known as Church Dreamers. They sought to make Christian life visible. Simultaneously, local parishes aimed to establish a presence. They rented spaces. These included a storefront called the OASE near the marketplace and smaller rooms in the community center.
From the beginning, the staff worked together. They are ecumenical. Denomination was not important. Active participation mattered most. An ecumenical team was created with approval from both Catholic and Protestant sides.
In 2002, the “Ökumenische Kirchenladen” or Ecumenical Church Shop opened in the OASE. It provided an easy way to connect with the church. People would say, “I’m going to the Kirchenladen.” This could be for shopping or for the monthly ecumenical service.
Kirche im Vauban recognized that Christian life extends beyond church members. Many residents with Christian values were involved in community projects. They lacked formal church ties. Kirche im Vauban supports these individuals. It offers space for their ideas. The church became a place for people to connect. It allowed the institutional church to be recognized as a vital social player.
Participation in social work is key. The Kirche im Vauban is seen as an active participant in the community. It can address neighborhood issues and promote church interests. During a dispute involving the removal of a caravan park, the church played a role in mediating. Many saw this as a positive step. It demonstrated the church’s commitment to social peace.
Kirche im Vauban also offers creative programs for all ages. Traditions are not rigid. People contribute ideas that may last a short time. Or they may endure.
Kirche im Vauban embodies creativity. It operates in a secular environment. It enriches the religious landscape with its unique approach. Whether it always succeeds is debatable. The people involved are making an important effort.
