A buried treasure. A vanished village. This is the story of the Kirche der Dorfwüstung Sulza. We stand on the site of a forgotten world. North of the modern Sulzer Siedlung, the ghosts of a medieval village whisper secrets to those who listen. The Kirche der Dorfwüstung Sulza, or “Church of the deserted village of Sulza,” is not a standing church, but a testament to a community lost to time. Archaeological excavations in 1995 unearthed the foundations of this church and its accompanying cemetery. And under the cemetery wall lay a stunning discovery: a coin hoard buried around 1205. Over 1,300 silver bracteates, thin coins often bearing religious imagery, were found nestled within a large ceramic vessel. These coins now reside in the Erfurt Stadtmuseum, a tangible link to the people who once worshipped at Kirche der Dorfwüstung Sulza. The village of Sulza itself dates back to at least the 8th or 9th century. It thrived for several hundred years. Its story is etched in the earth, not in towering stone. The first documented mention of Sulza appears in 1265. But the village was ultimately abandoned sometime in the 14th or 15th century. The reason for its desertion remains a mystery. Perhaps economic hardship or environmental changes gradually drove the inhabitants away. It wasn’t a sudden catastrophe, but a slow fading. Many likely sought refuge within the growing walls of Erfurt. The Kirche der Dorfwüstung Sulza measured 9 by 18.5 meters. It featured a rectangular nave. It had a chancel with an apse. The thick, one-meter walls were constructed using “opus spicatum,” a herringbone masonry technique typical of the Romanesque period. Today, the church’s foundations have been reconstructed using the original stones. It’s a poignant reminder of the lives lived and the faith practiced within these walls. The church’s outline is a window into the past. The buried coins are a whisper from a bygone era. The Kirche der Dorfwüstung Sulza, though lost to time, is not forgotten. Its story lives on, a testament to the ebb and flow of history.
