Considering bora rings. Do you know where the name Kippa-Ring comes from?

Welcome to Kippa-Ring. It is a suburb in the City of Moreton Bay. Kippa-Ring is located on the Redcliffe Peninsula. This area is rich in history. It officially became a suburb in 1971. But its story began long before that.

The name Kippa-Ring has Indigenous roots. It combines the Kabi word “kippa”. Kippa means young uninitiated man. The “ring” part refers to a bora ring. Bora rings were significant Aboriginal sites. They were used for initiation ceremonies. Old maps used the bora ring as a reference point. The area was known as Kippa-Ring long before it became a suburb.

Early Kippa-Ring was different from what you see today. Until the 1950s it was mostly undeveloped. Farming and small businesses dotted the landscape. The swampy land to the north was called “Kippering Swamp”. This area later became part of the Newport canal development.

In the 1960s residential development began to boom. Many areas were transformed into housing. Kippa-Ring State School opened in 1960. Hercules Road State School followed in 1976. These schools shaped the community.

Kippa-Ring is now a bustling hub. It is the commercial centre for the Redcliffe region. It is home to large shopping centres. You can find Peninsula Fair and Kippa-Ring Shopping Centre here. Peninsula Fair was home to one of the first Kmart stores in Queensland.

Kippa-Ring has excellent transport links. Kippa-Ring railway station is the terminus of the Redcliffe Peninsula railway line. The station opened in 2016. It provides easy access to Brisbane and other areas. Several bus routes also serve the station.

Today Kippa-Ring has a population of nearly 10000 people. It is a diverse community. It is made up of people from all walks of life. The suburb has parks, schools, and shopping centres. It offers a great quality of life for its residents.

Kippa-Ring is more than just a suburb. It is a place with a rich history. It is a place with a vibrant present. It is a place with a promising future. As we conclude our tour take a moment. Think about the Indigenous origins. Consider the transformation from farmland to suburb. Remember the community spirit that defines Kippa-Ring.
