The name “Kionslieu” itself speaks of this connection, derived from the Manx words “Kon Sloo” meaning “Mountain’s End.” Carved into the gable of the farmhouse are the initials “RC Clucas” and the year “AD MDCCCL (1850).” This marks Richard Clucas, born at Kionslieu in 1816, who made significant alterations to the house in 1850. In 1851, the census reveals a bustling household at Kionslieu, with Richard, his wife Christian, their children, and other residents filling the rooms. One of their daughters, Mary Ann Clucas, married John Kermode and raised a large family at Kionslieu. Their legacy, and those of other families like the Kellys, Quayles, Clagues, Maddrells, and Wattersons, is woven into the fabric of Kionslieu. Kionslieu Farm Cottages opened for guests in May 1994. Each cottage carries a name that echoes the farm’s history. Peacock’s Rest was named after a mischievous peacock named Percy. Haybarn recalls the building’s original purpose. Turkeytree Cottage takes its name from the ancient ash tree where turkeys once roosted. Blackberry Cottage reflects the abundance of berries in the surrounding hedges. Redwheel Cottage connects to the nearby Foxdale Mines and its red water wheel, later moved to Silverdale Glen. Today, Kionslieu Farm Cottages offers five delightful accommodations.
