What if bridges could talk? Imagine the stories Kinoe Bashi could tell. Today, we’re standing before Kinoe Bashi. It is not just a bridge, it is a landmark.

Kinoe Bashi offers passage. It invites us to consider the layers of history beneath our feet. It connects not only land but also time.

Like many place names in Osaka, the Shinsaibashi shopping district gets its name from one of the many town bridges. These bridges were built and managed by local merchants. Shinsaibashi was a much-loved landmark bridge. It spanned the Nagahori-gawa canal.

In 1622, the original wooden bridge was built. Shinsai Okada, one of the merchants who dug the Nagahori-gawa canal, built it. The bridge was named after its builder. It was 35 meters long and 4 meters wide.

As the popularity of Shinmachi increased, so did the shops. They lined the streets connected by the bridge. The area became Osaka’s main shopping district. The wooden bridge needed constant repairs.

In 1873, the wooden bridge was replaced. A 37.1 meters long and 5.2 meters wide arched truss iron bridge was imported from Germany. The arched bridge was unusual. It became a popular topic.

In 1909, a street car was constructed. The iron bridge was replaced. Osaka’s first stone bridge was built. It was a Western-styled double arched bridge. Four-leafed clovers were carved into the railings. At night, eight gas lamps illuminated the bridge. Townspeople nicknamed it Eyeglasses bridge. Its reflection in the water looked like glasses.

In 1964, the Nagahori-gawa canal was reclaimed. It became a road. The bridge was taken down. Carved railings and lamps were used in a pedestrian overpass. The 1989 Hollywood movie Black Rain used this bridge in a scene.

Later, the overpass was removed. Crysta Nagahori, an underground shopping mall, was constructed. The mall opened in 1997. Lamps and stone railings were used for a sidewalk bridge above the mall. Water flows under the bridge in the mall’s ceiling.

In 1973, the German-made iron bridge was reconstructed. It is now a pedestrian overpass in Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park.

Consider Kinoe Bashi. It represents ingenuity and adaptation. This bridge is more than just a crossing. It’s a testament to Osaka’s dynamic history. Each stone and arch tells a story. This is a story of innovation, community, and enduring spirit.
