Ever smelled the intoxicating aroma of fermenting grains? That’s the promise of Kings County Distillery. Right here in the heart of the Brooklyn Navy Yard stands New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery. Founded in 2010 by Colin Spoelman and David Haskell Kings County Distillery is a testament to the revival of American craft distilling.

Kings County wasn’t always a celebrated distillery. It began humbly in a tiny 325 square-foot space in East Williamsburg. Five 24-liter stainless steel stills worked tirelessly churning out whiskey day and night. It was the smallest commercial distillery in the country. Imagine the dedication required to make such a small space produce award-winning whiskey.

In 2012 a significant move happened. The distillery relocated to its current location in the historic Paymaster Building within the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This iconic building provided the space needed to expand operations. More importantly it placed Kings County Distillery near the site of the legendary Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the 1860s. It was also near the waterfront’s former distillery district.

The distillery’s innovative spirit shines through its product line. They create a wide variety of whiskeys including corn whiskey bourbon rye and even a peated bourbon. All this comes from a place that once made the smallest batches. Kings County never buys bulk whiskey. Every drop is made in-house. This commitment to quality resulted in numerous accolades from prestigious competitions like the American Distilling Institute’s “Distillery of the Year” award.

Kings County Distillery doesn’t just make whiskey. They’ve also established a tasting room called The Gatehouses. Located in the historic Sands Street gate of the Brooklyn Navy Yard this spot offers an immersive experience. Here you can sample their award-winning creations. You can also learn about the rich history and unique distilling methods that make Kings County so special.

Kings County Distillery is more than just a business. It’s a symbol of Brooklyn’s resilient spirit. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation creating a unique and captivating experience for everyone who visits. So take a moment to appreciate this piece of New York’s distilling heritage. Remember the story of Kings County Distillery’s humble beginnings and its impressive rise to become a leading craft distillery.
