What if I told you that this very spot, where Kingdom Restoration once stood, was at the center of a shocking series of events? It’s a story of faith, manipulation, and ultimately, tragedy.

Kingdom Restoration, led by Pastor Kevin Smith, became a focal point of controversy in Montego Bay. It wasn’t just another church. It was a place where the lines between religious devotion and cult-like behavior blurred with fatal consequences.

Reneto Adams, a retired Senior Superintendent of Police, pointed out that cult behavior isn’t new to Jamaica. He suggested that the extreme practices at Kingdom Restoration were an exposed example of a broader phenomenon. Adams highlighted how some individuals seek healing, wealth, or even visas through desperate measures, sometimes involving violence and rituals.

October 2021 marked a dark chapter for Kingdom Restoration. Two members tragically lost their lives in a ritual sacrifice. A third was killed during a confrontation with the police. The pastor’s alarming posts on social media foreshadowed the horrific events. One post urged followers to leave immediately for 123 Albion Road dressed in white, claiming “The Flood is coming”.

The police arrested forty-two members of the congregation and fourteen children were taken into state care. The women and seven of the men faced charges related to breaches of the Disaster Risk Management Act. Pastor Kevin Smith was among those held in custody.

The repercussions extended beyond the immediate aftermath. The former home of Kingdom Restoration was put up for sale for $37 million. The property carries the weight of its past. It remains a stark reminder of the events that unfolded there.

The building itself was ransacked, stripped bare after the killings. Overgrown foliage now hides much of the property, adding to the somber atmosphere. The location is a one-acre lot located five minutes from downtown Montego Bay.

Adding to the grim narrative, Kevin Smith died in a car crash while being transported to Kingston to face charges. Andre Ruddock, accused of slitting the throat of one of the victims on Smith’s orders, is still before the court.

Testimonies revealed the extent of Smith’s control over his followers. He demanded money and projected death upon those who disobeyed. Congregants addressed him with titles like “His Excellency” and “His Majesty.”

The Jamaica Council of Churches condemned the violence. They defended true Christianity against the actions of Kingdom Restoration. Reneto Adams expressed shock that such activities occurred during lockdown. He also wondered why intelligence about the church’s practices didn’t surface sooner.

Today, Kingdom Restoration is a chilling example of how religious fervor can be twisted. It serves as a reminder to remain vigilant against those who exploit faith for their own purposes. The events here sparked conversations about the need for greater scrutiny of religious organizations. It also highlights the importance of critical thinking and independent judgment. The story of Kingdom Restoration is a cautionary tale etched into the landscape of Montego Bay.
