A former member of the congregation, Philipp Fusz, opened fire during a service, taking the lives of six adults and an unborn child. Eight others were injured, some critically. The attack wasn’t just on individuals; it was an assault on the very heart of this community. The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses became a symbol of loss and resilience in the aftermath. On March 25, 2023, a memorial service was held in a Hamburg sports arena, a testament to the enduring strength of the community. Over 3,300 people attended, with more than 90,000 joining via live stream. The service, a powerful display of the Bible’s ability to console, brought together not only Jehovah’s Witnesses but government officials and emergency service representatives. Even the First and Second Mayors of Hamburg attended, acknowledging the profound impact of the tragedy. Brother Mark Sanderson, a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, spoke at the service, reminding attendees that God doesn’t cause such tragedies. They are, as Ecclesiastes puts it, “unexpected events.” He emphasized that hope, faith, and love can triumph over hatred and violence.
