How about stepping into the world of King William’s College? It is more than just a school. It’s a place steeped in history and tradition. Founded in 1833, this college has witnessed countless stories unfold within its walls.

King William’s College began thanks to the Bishop Barrow Trust. This trust was created in 1668. Bishop Isaac Barrow wanted to provide education on the Isle of Man. The college opened with only 46 boys. It has grown into a co-educational institution for pupils aged 3 to 18.

King William’s College got its name from King William IV. He offered the founders his name as a valuable possession. The college’s motto is “Assiduitate Non Desidia” which means “By industry not sloth”. This reflects the school’s commitment to hard work.

The annual open water half-mile swim in Derbyhaven Bay is a famous tradition. It usually happens in late June. Pupils and staff brave the cold waters. Watching the swim is compulsory for all other students.

Since 1904, King William’s College has held the General Knowledge Paper. This is an annual general knowledge test. It is known for being highly difficult. The test is now voluntary. The Latin motto is “Scire ubi aliquid invenire possis, ea demum maxima pars eruditionis est”. It means “To know where you can find anything is, after all, the greatest part of erudition.”

The King William’s College Combined Cadet Force has a long military history. It began in 1911. The OTC was the only contingent to see active service in the Great War. Former cadets have won many honours in times of war.

Sports play a big role at King William’s College. The college’s cricket pitches host international competitions. The annual 1 XV Rugby match against Liverpool College is a historic event.

King William’s College has boarding houses available during school holidays. Colbourne House, School House, and Jackson House offer accommodation. The school’s sports facilities are available to hire too. These include an astro-turf pitch, sports hall, and swimming pool.

In 1844, a fire destroyed most of the college buildings. The library was also destroyed. The college was rebuilt and reopened.
