In 1933 eight souls gathered. They sought a place of worship a beacon of Christian service. Thus began the King Solomon Baptist Church. Its humble start at 3321 Audubon Street laid the foundation for a vibrant community. Brothers A E Armstrong Samuel Tophia and Johnny Jones along with Sisters Katie Rattley Martha Baker Sallie Dauphine and Selina Burrell had a vision. They sought Reverend Horace Leonard as their leader. His guidance shaped the church’s early years. The small congregation blossomed through prayer and praise.
King Solomon Baptist Church wasn’t always at its current location. It briefly resided at 3301 Fern Street in the Olive Theater. This temporary move was short-lived. The congregation raised funds to return to Audubon Street. Reverend Leonard wisely purchased the property. Local contractors Matthew Causey Clarence and Alvin Patterson donated their skills. They renovated the building. The church was renamed Greater King Solomon Baptist Church and received a charter in 1935. Reverend Leonard’s legacy extended far beyond Los Angeles. His name resonated throughout the country among ministers.
Reverend Irvin K McCorvey succeeded Reverend Leonard. His three-year tenure was marked by significant achievements. He was both a leader and an evangelist. Reverend James Alexander Wilkerson a church member took the helm in 1959. Under his leadership the church underwent further renovations. The exterior received a brick facelift. Two adjacent properties were also purchased. Reverend Wilkerson served faithfully until illness forced him to step back in 1978. The Deacon Board and associate ministers Reverend Hawkins Palmer and Griffin ensured the church’s continued operation. Deacon Joseph Butler played a crucial role. Reverend Wilkerson remained pastor emeritus until his passing in 1991.
The Reverend John Thomas White was elected pastor in 1986. He’s the fourth leader to guide Greater King Solomon Baptist Church. His 37-year tenure reflects devotion and commitment. Under his leadership a new edifice was built and dedicated in 1994. A remodeled fellowship hall followed in 2008. It boasts a state-of-the-art kitchen banquet seating and classrooms. Pastor White’s influence extends beyond the church. He’s actively involved in various community organizations. He demonstrates a dedication to his congregation and to the wider community. The church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community spirit. It’s a place of worship a hub of service and a symbol of enduring strength.
