Have you ever heard the story of the Leper King? In the heart of Siem Reap, Cambodia, stands a statue known as the King Master Statue. This iconic statue, a testament to the enduring power of belief and the richness of Khmer history, is more than just a sculpted figure. It’s a window into the past, a symbol of devotion, and a constant reminder of the intricate tapestry of Angkorian history. The statue, a replica of the original Leper King statue that now resides in the National Museum of Phnom Penh, is a revered symbol of the ancient Khmer civilization.

It is said that the Leper King, once a powerful ruler, contracted leprosy, and the statue was created in his memory. The original statue, carved from sandstone, stood on a terrace in Angkor Thom, the capital of the Khmer empire. The terrace was also believed to be the site of royal cremations, further associating the Leper King with the cycle of life and death. As the Khmer Empire declined, so too did the fortunes of the Leper King statue. The statue was looted, its head taken, and replaced with a replica. Later, during the turbulent years of the Khmer Rouge, it was once again vandalized and broken into pieces before being restored. The statue was moved to Siem Reap, its significance and cultural value recognized, only to be stolen yet again, its head re-replaced. Today, this statue sits in the royal gardens, its body restored, its face painted, and its spirit, it is believed, still watches over the city of Siem Reap. The King Master Statue stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, of the enduring nature of belief, and of the enduring legacy of the Khmer civilization.
