Clutching a steaming plate from King BBQ Ham Nghi, I pondered a curious connection. This restaurant, nestled in Hanoi’s vibrant heart, bears the name of a Vietnamese emperor, a man whose life intertwined with art, exile, and the echoes of a lost throne. King BBQ Ham Nghi, the restaurant, offers a modern culinary experience. But Emperor Hàm Nghi’s story is one of stark contrasts, a blend of royal heritage and artistic passion. Born in Huế’s Imperial City in 1871, he ascended the throne at the tender age of 13. His reign was short-lived, lasting a mere year before French colonial forces encroached upon his kingdom. In 1885, an uprising against the French, known as the Cần Vương movement, erupted. Hàm Nghi, a symbol of resistance, was forced into hiding. He and his loyalists waged a guerilla war against the French. However, betrayal led to his capture in 1888. His brother, Đồng Khánh, was installed as a puppet emperor, solidifying French control. Hàm Nghi, stripped of his power, began a new chapter of his life far from Vietnam, in French Algeria. Exiled and thousands of miles from his homeland, Hàm Nghi could have succumbed to despair. Instead, he discovered solace in art. Under the tutelage of French artists like Marius Reynaud, he honed his skills in painting and sculpture. He immersed himself in the vibrant landscapes of Algeria, capturing the twilight hues and rugged terrain on canvas. His art became a refuge, a space where he could express his longing for a lost kingdom and his resilience in the face of adversity. He painted misty landscapes, imbued with a melancholic beauty, reflecting the inner turmoil of an emperor in exile. Hàm Nghi never saw his homeland again. He died in Algeria in 1944, leaving behind a unique legacy as both a monarch and an artist. He remains a poignant figure in Vietnamese history. A symbol of resistance and artistic expression. And here, at King BBQ Ham Nghi in Hanoi, his name resonates, a reminder of a complex past and a tribute to a king who found solace in art amidst the ruins of his reign.
