The original children’s hospital, the “Städtische Kinderheilanstalt mit Säuglingsheim,” opened in 1922. In 1958, the city council decided to build a new, independent children’s hospital. This hospital would become the first phase of the new central clinic. This new Kinderklinik Augsburg opened its doors in Kriegshaber on December 22, 1965. The hospital’s management changed hands in 1971, becoming part of the Krankenhauszweckverband Augsburg. Another significant change occurred in 2000 when the Kinderklinik Augsburg merged with the neighboring Klinikum Augsburg. More recently, on April 12, 2011, construction began on a brand-new Kinderklinik Augsburg, incorporating the “Mutter-Kind-Zentrum Schwaben.” While renovating the old building was considered, it proved too challenging. The new building aimed to streamline connections between the obstetrics and neonatology departments. Today, the Kinderklinik Augsburg Mutter-Kind-Zentrum Schwaben stands as a testament to Augsburg’s commitment to children’s healthcare.
