Long ago, in the Asuka period (538-710), a new territorial division of Japan arose. From this emerged Kinai, meaning “around the capital”. This historically significant region, also known as Kinki or Kansai, encompassed the five ancient provinces of Yamato, Yamashiro, Kawachi, Settsu, and Izumi. Kinai became the heart of political and cultural life in Japan for over a millennium. The presence of imperial capitals like Kyoto and Nara cemented Kinai’s importance. Kinai isn’t a formal administrative region today. But its historical significance remains. It represents a time when emperors ruled from within its boundaries. This area played a crucial role in shaping Japanese culture and tradition. Kinai also played a crucial role in disseminating Buddhism throughout Japan. The region boasts numerous temples and shrines, reflecting its spiritual heritage. Today, Kinai overlaps significantly with the modern Kansai region. This area includes major cities like Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. Visiting this region offers a journey through time. You’ll experience the ancient heart of Japan and see the echoes of its imperial past.
